Taoiseach to discuss EU response to US tariffs with von der Leyen

Taoiseach Micheál Martin will meet the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen in Brussels this morning.

His visit coincides with the EU publishing its proposed countermeasures to US tariffs, which would be implemented if it proves impossible to reach a trade deal with the Trump administration.

The agenda for this morning’s meeting between the Taoiseach and the Commission President includes economic issues, such as improving EU competitiveness, as well as international crisis like Ukraine and Gaza.

However, the main focus is likely to be the EU’s planned response to US tariffs, with the Commission publishing its proposed counter measures should trade talks fail.

The Taoiseach has repeatedly stressed Ireland’s strong desire to secure a negotiated settlement, saying in a trade war, everyone ultimately loses and the poorest lose most of all.

Mr Martin will find out today what the European Commission is planning regarding proposed countermeasures and will be able to assess the impact such measures might have on Ireland, and seek to ameliorate any damage to the Irish economy.

Tánaiste Simon Harris told his parliamentary party last night that the proposed EU countermeasures could bring “new challenges” for Ireland, adding that “difficult decisions” may need to be taken.

In his discussions with President von der Leyen, Mr Martin will also brief her on Ireland’s plans for its six-month long presidency of the EU Council, which begins on 1 July, 2026.

Two-day Belgium visit

The Taoiseach is also on the second day of a two-day visit to Belgium.

Yesterday, Mr Martin visited the port of Antwerp, which is a main artery for Irish goods into the EU single market.

While in the city, he held talks with representatives of Irish businesses in Belgium.

Today, he will also meet the Belgian Prime Minister, Bart De Wever.

Trade, energy and bi-lateral relations are expected to be the focus of the Taoiseach’s discussions with Prime Minister De Wever.
