The number of new homes that building work commenced on in June was down 16% on the previous month.
However, compared to June of last year, the number of commencement notices lodged for residential properties was up 25%.
In June work began on a total of 2,574 new homes around the country, down from 3,059 in May, but up from 2,060 in the same month of las year.
It means that commencements so far this year, at 15,561, are up 10% on the same period last year – a record when compared to similar periods since the data series began in 2015.
The Dun-Laoghaire Rathdown area in Dublin recorded the largest number of residential construction starts in June, with 298 new developments commenced.
But Dublin City has seen the greatest number of commencements so far this year, at 2,767.
6,324 of the total number of starts so far this year have been in the areas of the four Dublin local authorities.
9,166 commencements have been lodged for developments in the greater Dublin area, which includes all the Dublin local authorities and the mid-east region.
466 of the June total were one-off units, bringing the total so far this year to 2,297.
