European Parliament President Roberta Metsola will address a joint sitting of the Oireachtas later today.
Ms Metsola arrives in Ireland this morning for the start of a two-day visit, during which she will meet President Michael D Higgins, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and Tánaiste Micheál Martin.
The visit has been organised to mark 50 years of Ireland’s membership of the European Union.
Ms Metsola was elected as President of the European Parliament over a year ago, the youngest person to hold the role.
This morning she will meet the Taoiseach at Government Buildings. Ms Metsola will address a joint sitting of the Oireachtas in the Dáil chamber this afternoon.
It is expected that she will thank Ireland for its humanitarian response to the war in Ukraine and will pay tribute to Ireland’s contribution to the European Union over its 50 years.
Ms Metsola will also stress the importance of peace in Europe and in Ireland.
This will be followed by contributions from the Government and Opposition.
Later today Ms Metsola will meet the Tánaiste and tomorrow she will visit President Higgins at Áras an Uachtaráin.
Her visit comes as the European Parliament responds to corruption investigations involving current and former MEPs.
Last month Ms Metsola unveiled her proposals to the parliament to enhance transparency and standards in office.
