A new minimum pay rate of €12.50 per hour is to be introduced for workers in the security industry.
The new pay scale is scheduled to come into effect on August 29th and will be followed by another increase to €12.90 per hour from February 1st next year.
The minimum rate of pay has been €11.65 since the middle of 2019.
The increases come on foot of an Employment Regulation Order which was approved by the Minister of State for Business, Employment and Retail, Damien English.
The Order also includes new procedures relating to annual leave, rest periods and breaks and minimum shift times.
As part of the proposals, an ‘unsocial hours’ premium will apply to hours worked between 9pm and 7am provided the worker works at least 3 hours in that period.
Workers under the age of 18 will be paid at a rate that’s not less than 70% of the rate specified, it adds.
“The Security Industry Joint Labour Committee is a good example of how effective the reformed Joint Labour Committee system can be when representatives of employees and employers voluntarily negotiate together to identify a mutually beneficial agreement,” Minister English said.
“I believe that for workers, the advantage of Joint Labour Committees is that they see fair secure terms and conditions such as wage rates, sick pay etc. agreed and, for some employers, the advantage of the system, based as it is on the principle of self-governance, means that they can agree and set minimum pay and conditions, agree on work practices which are custom-made to their industry,” he added.
